Built to Secure. Made to Endure: pewag Launches Comprehensive New Shackles Range

pewag has launched a complete new shackles range including eight types of shackles. From everyday lifting and rigging to extreme cold environments and commercial fishing operations, the range is designed to give procurement managers and riggers a single, trusted source for shackles that meet both US and international standards.

A range built around one principle: no compromise on security

Shackles are among the most widely used components in lifting, rigging and load securement and among the most consequential when they fail. pewag’s new shackles range has been developed with that responsibility at its centre, combining high-quality alloy steel, rigorous manufacturing standards and a product architecture that gives users a clear, logical choice across every application.

Every product carries EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification including the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the material used, full batch traceability and online certificate access. All shackles come with a hot-dip galvanised bow and a powder-coated pin for corrosion resistance and long service life.

The full range complies with EN 13889, ASME B30.26, ISO 2415 and US Federal Specification RR-C-271, dual European and US standard compliance that makes pewag shackles suitable for international projects and global supply chains without the need to source different products for different markets.

Andreas Breidler, Technical Director Lifting Chains said: “By adding shackles to our portfolio, we are reaching another important milestone in the expansion of our lifting product range, further strengthening our ability to offer reliable and engineered lifting solutions.”

The Base range: four variants, every standard application covered

The Base series covers the four core shackle configurations that account for the vast majority of lifting, rigging and load securement requirements. All four are Grade 6 with a 6:1 safety factor, rated from 2 to 55 tonnes (screw pin) or 2 to 85 tonnes (BNC) and suitable for operating temperatures from -40°C to +200°C.

The P210 Bow shackle with screw pin is the go-to for temporary lifting operations, quick to rig and de-rig, with a hot-dip galvanised bow and powder-coated screw pin. Its bow geometry supports both single and multi-leg sling configurations, making it the natural choice for connecting lifting slings to loads in construction, marine and entertainment rigging applications.

Where load movement or vibration could cause a screw pin to loosen, the P215 Bow shackle with bolt, nut and cotter pin provides exceptional security. The bolt, nut and cotter pin (BNC) closure is the correct specification for permanent or semi-permanent setups, marine towing, mining and oil and gas operations where pin retention under dynamic loads is non-negotiable. WLL extends to 85 tonnes.

For single-direction lifts and straight-line pulls where side loading is minimised, the P220 Dee shackle with screw pin and P225 Dee shackle with bolt, nut and cotter pin deliver greater strength by virtue of their Dee-shaped geometry. Both are optimised for single-leg systems only and are suited to industrial lifting, load securing on trailers and handling machine parts in manufacturing environments.

Plus (P415): Grade 8 strength in a smaller package

For applications where load capacity requirements are high but space or weight is constrained, the P415 Bow shackle Plus with BNC delivers Grade 8 performance with smaller dimensions and reduced weight compared to a Grade 6 shackle of equivalent WLL. Rated from 3.3 to 85 tonnes with a 5:1 safety factor, it is the correct specification for lifting heavy equipment in confined spaces, turbine housings, engine rooms, ship hull sections and for mobile crane and offshore winch operations where connection point size and total system weight both matter.

The P415 operates down to -20°C and meets ASME B30.26 and US Fed. Spec. RR-C-271, making it appropriate for international heavy-lift projects.

Star (P615): certified performance at -60°C

The P615 Bow shackle Star with BNC is pewag’s solution for operations in extreme cold and are rated to -60°C (-76°F), a temperature at which standard shackles risk becoming brittle and failing under load. With a 7:1 safety factor (6:1 for the 55 and 85 tonne sizes) and Grade 8 steel, it maintains full impact strength and load capacity in conditions that would compromise competing products.

Target applications include offshore platforms in the North Sea, Alaska and Arctic regions, port operations affected by sea ice, wind energy installations in cold climates and polar logistics. For Norwegian havbruk operators and North Sea service vessel operators in particular, the P615 addresses a genuine operational gap that standard shackle ranges cannot fill.

The P615 carries EN 13889, ASME B30.26, ISO 2415 and RR-C-271 certification and is supplied with EN 10204 Type 3.1 material certificates and online certificate access.

“Most shackles are tested and rated for standard operating conditions. The P615 Star exists because our customers in the North Sea and Arctic environments needed something that wouldn’t just perform on paper, it has to perform at -60 degrees Celsius, in the field, every time.”

(P213) Fishing Bow shackle with screw pin

Fishing shackles (P213 & P223): designed for the deck, not just the drawing board

The two Fishing variants in the range are designed specifically for the realities of commercial fishing and aquaculture operations; environments where equipment is handled fast, in wet conditions, often by crew wearing heavy gloves and where failure of a connection can mean lost gear, lost catch or worse.

Both the P213 Fishing Bow shackle with screw pin and the P223 Fishing Dee shackle with screw pin feature a square-head screw pin designed to fit the standard tools carried on fishing vessels, ensuring a secure fit and reducing the risk of slippage or loosening in tough conditions. Both are Grade 6 with a 6:1 safety factor, rated from 2 to 25 tonnes and suitable from -40°C to +200°C.

Applications include connecting trawl net components, attaching mooring lines, anchor chains and buoys, hoisting nets, catches and heavy gear with cranes or winches and securing buoys, floats and markers to fishing gear or mooring systems.

The fishing shackles complement pewag’s broader Pelagus marine chain range including G60 aquaculture mooring chains, G80 and G95 fishing chains and the full suite of master links, connecting links and hooks allowing fishing and aquaculture operators to specify a complete, compatible hardware system from a single manufacturer.

Geometry, compliance and selection: what buyers need to know

The range is structured around two key choices: geometry (Bow vs. Dee) and pin type (Screw vs. BNC). Understanding these decisions simplifies specification:

  • Bow shackles support both single and multi-leg sling configurations and accommodate angled loading, the correct choice for most lifting, marine and construction applications. The angle between legs must not exceed 120°.
  • Dee shackles are optimised for straight-line pulls and single-leg systems only. They offer greater strength in this configuration but must not be used with multi-leg slings.
  • Screw pin closures are ideal for temporary operations requiring fast rigging and de-rigging.
  • BNC (bolt, nut and cotter pin) closures provide vibration-resistant security for permanent or semi-permanent setups and dynamic loading environments.

Every shackle in the range is marked with the pewag manufacturer’s mark, grade and batch code for full traceability. Online certificates are available for all products, supporting compliance documentation requirements on complex projects.

pewag Launches Dedicated Fishing & Aquaculture Brochure, Bringing Comprehensive Chain and Lifting Solutions to a Fast-Growing Sector

The new pewag Fishing & Aquaculture brochure brings together the company’s complete range of marine-grade chains, lifting hardware, shackles, slings and connecting components in a single dedicated resource designed for the demanding realities of commercial fishing and modern fish farming operations.

Chains for the aquaculture industry from pewag

A resource built for harsh environments

Commercial fishing and aquaculture place extreme demands on chain and lifting equipment. Saltwater corrosion, constant mechanical movement, shock loading, heavy catches and limited maintenance windows all combine to make component selection a critical safety and operational decision and one that cannot afford to be made on incomplete information.

To help procurement managers, marine engineers and aquaculture farm operators make the right choices with confidence, pewag has published a new dedicated Fishing & Aquaculture brochure. It covers the full product ecosystem from specialist fishing chains for trawler operations, to aquaculture mooring chains, shackles, slings, master links, rings, connecting links and hooks all in a single, technically detailed reference.

The brochure reflects pewag’s longstanding commitment to the fishing and aquaculture sector, reinforcing the Pelagus range as a go-to solution for professionals who cannot afford component failure at sea.

Fishing chains: engineered for every trawl application

The brochure opens with pewag’s comprehensive range of fishing chains products that share a common DNA of high-alloy steel, quench-and-temper heat treatment and 100% proof loading of every link, while varying in geometry and grade to suit specific applications:

  • G80 and G95 mid link fishing chains are designed for fishing trawlers and are available in sizes from 10mm up to 26mm, with breaking forces up to 95,000 kg. Both are manufactured from special alloy steel treated to minimise the risk of hydrogen embrittlement and are suitable for operating temperatures from -40°C to +200°C.
  • G80 and G95 long link fishing chains offer lighter weight and longer links for the same trawler applications, with the G80 long link range also suitable for container lashing.
  • The G95 profile chain is a standout innovation. Its profiled link design increases contact surface area between links, distributing forces more evenly, reducing contact pressure and localised wear. Unlike conventional round link chain, this produces greater dimensional stability, extended service life and reduced maintenance, particularly valuable for bottom trawl operations in abrasive seabed conditions.
  • G70 tuna chains and assemblies are purpose-built for purse seiners, with a ‘No Peeling’ hot-dip galvanisation process that bonds zinc metallurgically to the chain’s base steel; delivering 120/140 µm of zinc protection that will not chip during net retrieval. Custom welded pendants and bridles are available on request.
  • Tickler chains for bottom trawlers feature surface hardening of HV>470, providing significantly extended service life for seabed sweeping operations. A chain cutting service is also available for custom lengths.

All fishing chains in the range are manufactured in Europe from European-grade alloy steel and are supplied with a full operating manual.

Aquaculture chains: securing cage and net systems underwater

For aquaculture operations, particularly offshore salmon and fish cage installations where mooring reliability is mission-critical, pewag offers its G60 long link aquaculture chain. These chains are produced specifically for mooring companies and cage installation teams who need to trust the chain to perform once deployed.

The G60 long link chain features the same ‘No Peeling’ hot-dip galvanisation process as the tuna chain, delivering an 85µm zinc layer bonded metallurgically to the steel. The long link design is optimised for maximum flexibility and net tensioning compatibility and the chains are also suitable for use in sinker tubes. Every link is proof-loaded to 62.5% of its G60 breaking force. View the G60 long link aquaculture chain range.

Crucially, pewag has taken specific precautions in the production process to minimise hydrogen embrittlement risk – a failure mode of particular concern in offshore mooring applications where component replacement mid-deployment is not a practical option.

Shackles: from precision load monitoring to heavy-duty mooring connections

The brochure’s shackle section highlights two distinct product categories that together cover the full spectrum of aquaculture and fishing shackle applications.

For load monitoring, pewag’s Aquaculture Load Pin Shackles are designed for precision-critical applications including cage weight measurement and crane loading data capture from service vessels. The load pin is manufactured from AISI 630 stainless steel, with wireless data transmission to smartphone, tablet or computer and the option of subsea hard-wired variants on request. Available in sizes from 7/8″ to 1¾” with working load limits up to 25 tonnes.

For structural connections, the G6 bow shackle with screw pin (P210) and G6 bow shackle with bolt, nut and cotter pin (P215) cover all standard mooring, net connection and buoy attachment applications. Both feature hot-dip galvanised bodies and powder-coated pins/bolts, with a 6:1 safety factor and working load limits from 2 to 55 tonnes (P210) and up to 85 tonnes (P215).

Slings, master links, connecting links and hooks: a complete lifting ecosystem

Alongside chain and shackle products, the brochure covers the full range of lifting and connection hardware required by fishing and aquaculture operations:

  • Round slings and webbing slings (1–12 tonne WLL) offer lightweight, damage-free lifting for cages, nets and mooring frames, with custom lengths, branding options and wear sleeve configurations available.
  • Master links: the G80 master link and G80 wide body master link cover standard and heavy-duty lifting applications in and out of water. The AWI stainless steel master link in G60 is manufactured from AISI 318 LN duplex stainless steel fully compliant with food safety HACCP norms, making it the correct specification when the lifting assembly will come into contact with the catch.
  • Connecting links: the G80 fishing connecting link (Connex) features smooth body profiles that prevent fouling in nets and gear, with an un-recessed fishing pin and specially-coated bush. The CWI Connex stainless steel G60 connecting link and CW Connex fishing connecting link (G100 mechanical values) complete the range, with standard lifting Connex connectors convertible to fishing specification via CBHW spare parts kits.
  • Hooks: three self-locking hook variants the G80 eye self-locking hook, G80 swivel self-locking hook and G80 eye sling hook with forged safety latch provide automatic locking under load and wide jaw openings for efficient on-deck operations. All are CE-marked, BG-approved and manufactured to EN 1677 standards.
