Hoist Chain for Hoists, Chain Blocks and Lever Hoists
High-strength hoist chain engineered for chain hoists, chain blocks and lever hoists across stagecraft, workshop and manufacturing use – built to EN 818-7 and ISO 3077, and available as genuine pewag product or as a drop-in replacement for the chain in most hoists already on the market.

Don’t Replace The Hoist, Replace the Chain
Whether you’re fitting out a new hoist, maintaining an existing one, or replacing worn chain on equipment from another manufacturer, pewag’s hoist chain range covers Grade 80, 100 and 120, in round steel and pewag’s own profile steel construction.
The Range: Grade 80, 100 and 120
Every pewag hoist chain is case-hardened, electrogalvanized on pewag’s own continuous-working line for consistent corrosion resistance, and heat-treated for even hardness along every link. Choose by grade:
| Grade | Typical use | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| PCP corropro | > 430 | Round steel, case-hardened |
| Powder-coated | > 360 | Round or profile steel |
| Lacquered | 24 | Round or profile steel |
Round Steel or Profile Steel?
pewag was the first hoist chain manufacturer to offer a profile steel chain for hoists. Compared with an equivalent round steel chain, profile steel chain (HEP) is:
- 7% smaller in diameter at the same cross-sectional area – this allows a smaller chain wheel and a more compact hoist drive
- Stiffer against bending, for higher fatigue resistance and a greater safety margin against fatigue failure
- Longer-wearing, because its flat contact faces bear more evenly against the chain wheel and guide than a round profile does
Round steel chain remains the right choice where a hoist’s chain wheel is already sized for it. Profile steel chain is the better fit when space is tight or duty cycles are demanding.
pewag Entertainment Solutions: Built for Stagecraft
Touring rigs, fixed venues and broadcast sets all load and unload hoist chain constantly and need it to look right doing it. pewag entertainment solutions is a dedicated range for the entertainment and stage industry, built around PCP corropro, pewag’s own electrochemical black coating.
Independent salt-spray testing shows why corropro is specified for stage use over standard finishes:
| Coating | Hours to first corrosion (salt spray) | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| PCP corropro | > 430 | Round steel, case-hardened |
| Powder-coated | > 360 | Round or profile steel |
| Lacquered | 24 | Round or profile steel |
The range covers winner 200 and winner 400 PCP chain (G10, diameters 6×18 through 10×30) and matching G10/PCP hardware: suspension links (AW), coupling hanger sets (KMGW), Connex connecting links (CW), parallel hooks (PSW), welded shackles (GSCHW), and coupling hooks and shackles (KHSW/KSCHW). Custom powder-coat colours – including venue-matched anthracite (RAL 7016) – and made-to-order chain assemblies are available on request.
Replacement Hoist Chain for Your Existing Hoist
You don’t need to replace a chain hoist or chain block to get new chain for it. Most chain hoists on the market use a similar grade and pitch of chain, so compatibility usually comes down to matching the chain’s spec – grade, diameter and pitch – rather than the brand stamped on the hoist housing.
pewag hoist chain is supplied as a direct aftermarket replacement for the load chain in chain hoists, chain blocks and lever hoists from most major manufacturers, at the same grade and to the same EN 818-7 standard as the original. Tell us the hoist model, or the grade and dimensions stamped on the existing chain, and we’ll confirm the right replacement.
Chain Assembly Accessories
Complete the assembly with components matched to the same grade and finish as your chain:
- Master links – top-of-assembly connection to the hoist hook
- Swivel hooks, hoist hooks and grab hooks – for the load end of the assembly
- Connecting links – for joining or repairing chain runs
All accessories are rated to match pewag’s chain grades, so a complete assembly carries one consistent working load limit.
Standards, Testing and Traceability
- EN 818-7 and ISO 3077 govern dimensions, mechanical properties and testing for pewag hoist chain.
- Fatigue tested beyond the standard. EN 818-7 and ISO 3077 require hoist chain to withstand 2 million+ cycles at a maximum stress of 200 N/mm². pewag tests its own chain to higher maximum stresses of 220–230 N/mm².
- Every chain is stamped with a five-digit identification number, tracing production data and quality checks back to the raw material batch.
- Manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management, with ongoing research partnerships including TU Graz, Montanuniversität Leoben and Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Chains for Hoists FAQs
Hoist chain is the load chain that runs through a chain hoist, chain block or lever hoist’s mechanism – it’s sized and rated for that specific wheel and pawl system. A lifting or sling chain is used in a chain sling assembly for general rigging and isn’t designed to run through a hoist mechanism.
Inspection intervals depend on duty cycle and local regulation, but visual checks for wear, stretch and deformation should happen regularly, with a full inspection at the intervals your hoist manufacturer or local rules specify.
Each grade step raises the working load limit for the same chain diameter, letting you move more load through a smaller, lighter chain and hoist drive. Grade 80 covers most general workshop hoisting; Grade 120 (winner pro) suits the highest-capacity, most compact installations.
Profile steel chain is 7% smaller in diameter than round steel chain at the same cross-sectional area, with better bending resistance and wear life from its flatter contact faces – see the range comparison above.
Usually, yes. Most chain hoists on the market use a similar grade and pitch of chain, so compatibility comes down to matching the chain’s spec rather than the hoist’s brand. See Replacement Hoist Chain above.
pewag’s profile steel chain, PCP corropro coating and five-digit traceability stamping are differentiators most market-companion chains don’t offer at the same grade. Get in touch with your specific comparison and we’ll walk through the specs side by side.
