Tyre Protection Solutions
Underground Mining & Tunnelling
pewag tyre protection chains keep underground operations moving, from shallow tunnelling to the deepest mining levels. Engineered for LHD loaders, shuttle cars and scoops, they shield high-value tyres from cuts and abrasion while delivering dependable traction in wet, muddy and confined conditions.
From underground gold and nickel operations to base metal and tunnelling projects across Australia, pewag chains are built to perform where ground conditions are toughest and downtime is costliest.

Why underground is hard on tyres and chains
Underground loaders work in narrow drives, often over long tramming distances, with heavy loads on wet, sharp rock. Tyres fail often, and changing one in a confined heading is slow and difficult. There is also very little room around the tyre to fit a chain.
pewag chains run in operations from shallow tunnelling down to mining at 4,785 m. For Australian hard-rock mines in WA, Queensland and NSW, pewag Australia supports sites from Barrack Heights (NSW) and Canning Vale (WA).
Underground Mining & Tunnelling TPC Range
The pewag range for underground mining and tunnelling includes the multifunctional granite, the dense-mesh ringstar for wet and highly abrasive ground, and the heavy-duty tycoon for the hardest rock. Each is available with square or hexa mesh to balance tyre protection and traction.
Underground tycoon links
The underground versions of tycoon have reinforced rings, built for long tramming distances in wet underground conditions. The inside and outside mesh is dense, protecting the tyre flank as well as the tread.
| Link | M: tyre to machine (mm) | F: sidewall to machine (mm) | R: between dual tyres (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| tycoon 14/16 (underground) | 80 | 60 | 80 |
| tycoon 16/18S (underground) | 90 | 70 | 90 |
| tycoon 20 (underground) | 100 | 70 | 100 |
| ringstar 16 | 115 | 70 | 90 |
Ringstar 16 suits wet, abrasive drives, with a very tight square mesh. Where clearance is too tight for a chain, pewag has shaved tyres so a chain can be fitted.
FAQ for Underground Mining & Tunnelling
The underground mining and tunnelling range includes granite, ringstar and tycoon. granite is a versatile, multifunctional chain for mixed rock, ringstar offers an extremely dense mesh for wet and highly abrasive conditions, and tycoon is built for the hardest, most abrasive rock. Each is available in square and hexa mesh designs.
pewag tyre protection chains are built for the wet, abrasive and confined conditions found underground, from low surface tunnelling to the deepest mining levels. They protect tyres against cuts, punctures and sidewall damage while maintaining traction on muddy, uneven ground.
Square mesh provides the finest, densest coverage for maximum tyre protection. Hexa mesh adds grip alongside protection. Quad cross uses an 8-link construction for tough applications, and compact cross uses a 10-link construction for grip and self-cleaning. pewag can advise the best mesh for your rock type and machine.
They are typically fitted to LHD loaders, shuttle cars, scoops and other underground loaders and haulers, protecting the tyres that keep extraction and tunnelling operations running.
