Lifting and Spreader Beams for Long, Heavy and Awkward Loads
pewag lifting beams and spreader beams spread the load across two or more lifting points, keeping long, heavy or fragile loads level and stable. Choose Modulift modular spreader beams from 6 t to 2,000 t, with spans you can adjust for each lift, or design a custom lifting beam for low-headroom jobs in our online configurator.
Key Features & Benefits
- Modular spreader beams with capacities from 6 t to 2,000 t
- Adjustable span: interchangeable struts bolt between the end units, so one kit covers many lift lengths
- DNV-ST-0378 type approval on all MOD spreader beams up to 2,000 t
- Approved for subsea use up to 1,500 t
- Lightweight components that are easy to transport, store and assemble on site
- Spreader beams work in compression for a high capacity-to-weight ratio
- Custom lifting beams with a central top attachment and multiple lower lugs for restricted headroom
- Online Lifting Beam Configurator, with options for swivel hooks or shackles
- Manufactured in Europe

Lifting Beam Configurator
The pewag lifting beam configurator it is possible to configurate an individual lifting beam for any application or lifting challenge.
Spreader Beam or Lifting Beam: Which Do You Need?
| Spreader Beam | Lifting Beam | |
|---|---|---|
| How it carries the load | In compression, with top slings at an angle | In bending, from a single top attachment |
| Headroom needed | More, for the angled top slings | Less, so it suits low-ceiling buildings |
| Weight for capacity | Lighter for the same load | Heavier, because the beam takes the bending |
| Span | Adjustable with modular struts | Set by design, with adjustable lower lugs |
| pewag option | Modulift MOD spreader beams | Custom beams from the Lifting Beam Configurator |
As a rule, choose a spreader beam when you have the headroom and want the lightest, most flexible option, and a lifting beam when headroom is tight. A pewag lifting specialist can check your lift and recommend the right one.

Lifting Beam & Spreader Beam FAQs
A lifting beam is a below-the-hook device that hangs from a crane hook by a single top attachment and carries the load from two or more lifting points underneath. It keeps long or awkward loads level and suits low-headroom lifts.
A spreader beam holds the lifting slings apart so they hang vertically to the load. The beam works in compression, which makes it lighter than a lifting beam of the same capacity and protects the load from crushing forces.
A modular spreader beam such as the Modulift MOD is built from two end units, two drop links and interchangeable struts that bolt together. Add or remove struts to change the span, so one kit can handle many different lifts.
Yes. MOD spreader beams are adjusted by changing the struts between the end units. For example, the MOD 6 assembles from 16 in to 176 in in 4 in steps, and larger models reach much longer spans.
Yes. The online Lifting Beam Configurator lets you design a beam around your load, with adjustable lower attachment points and optional swivel hooks or shackles.
Yes. All MOD spreader beams carry DNV-ST-0378 type approval up to 2,000 t and are approved for subsea use up to 1,500 t.
In the US, lifting beams and spreader beams are below-the-hook lifting devices covered by ASME B30.20, which sets out marking, inspection and operator requirements. MOD user instructions specify use in line with ASME B30.20.
They’re used to lift long, wide or fragile loads such as steel structures, machinery, pipe bundles, modules, wind turbine components and offshore equipment, in construction, logistics, energy and heavy industry.
