Open Cut Mining

Open cut mining runs the world’s largest machines on the world’s largest tyres, and those tyres are among the highest single consumable costs on site. pewag tyre protection chains shield earthmover tyres from cuts, punctures and abrasion in hard, sharp rock, extending tyre life, improving traction and cutting costly downtime on wheel loaders and dump trucks.

From Western Australia’s iron ore operations to coal, copper and gold open cut mines across the country, pewag chains are proven on the scale of machinery Australian mining runs at.

Built for 24/7 load-and-haul

Open cut sites run large earthmover fleets around the clock, moving millions of tonnes over a huge area. Every tyre failure takes a machine out of that cycle, and replacement OTR tyres can take time to source.
pewag chains are fitted mainly to the wheel loaders and dozers working at the face. Chaining the face loader can benefit the whole fleet: a chained loader also acts as a compactor on the loading area, which helps protect the haul trucks’ tyres. Fitting all four loader positions gives the best result.

For sites in the Pilbara and WA goldfields, pewag Australia has an office at Canning Vale in Perth.

pewag’s Open Cut Mining TPC Range

pewag is the partner of choice for chaining the world’s largest mining machines and tyres. The products range covers every demand, from the all-round tyro and deep-grip spike for softer ground, to the multifunctional granite for mixed rock, the heavy-duty compact for the giants among loaders, and the dense-mesh ringstar and tycoon for the hardest, most abrasive hard rock. Each is available in square or hexa mesh to balance tyre protection and traction.

Chains for the largest loaders

For the biggest loaders and the most abrasive rock, pewag’s heaviest links are compact 21, tycoon 20 and 23, and tycoon ultimate. Tycoon ultimate was developed for the world’s largest wheel loaders. Compared with tycoon 23 it:

  • weighs 7.2% less, which eases fitting and saves fuel
  • lasts longer and costs less to buy
  • needs smaller clearances and less re-tensioning
  • has wear indicators showing 25, 50, 75 and 100% wear

Heavier links need more room around the tyre. Minimum clearances for the largest links:

Link M: tyre to machine (mm) F: sidewall to machine (mm) R: between dual tyres (mm)
tycoon 20 100 70 100
compact 21 120 80 110
tycoon ultimate 120 80 110
tycoon 23 120 80 110

Measure M and F at full axle oscillation, and F with the bucket lowered.

Sidewall protection for haul trucks

Sidewall damage is a leading cause of haul truck tyre failure. It often happens when trucks run close to berms and high bank faces. pewag’s flank protection chain covers the sidewall, has no speed limit, and fits tyres from 18.00-25 up to 59/80-63. The centre tread section can be changed without hammers.
